Time to Lighten Up

Written by Robert De Toni

“Lighten up, just enjoy life, smile more, laugh more, and don’t get so worked up about things.”  Kenneth Branagh

Seeing this quote comes at a great time for me.  With everything going on in the world and the changes in my professional life, I have noticed that I have just become too damn serious!   It seems that these events have conspired to shift my mindset into thinking that life is something that I have to endure rather than enjoy which, in effect, becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Do you have these same feelings?  If you do, then it’s time for you, and I, to stop fixating only on everything that is “going wrong” or “has to get done,”  and to start taking the time to enjoy some of the lighter things in life.   This year more than ever, and now especially while less restrictions allow for more options, it’s important to remind ourselves of the simple things that bring us joy.  Some of those things for me are sitting on the dock at a friend’s cottage; my sons unexpectedly dropping in for a visit;  meeting up with a friend for lunch; and taking my dog out for a walk and shamelessly encouraging her to chase rabbits.  If I really step back and take a moment to count them, there are still many more things in my life that I love, than not – and focussing my energy on them is generally a much better use of my precious time.

Life is too short to simply go through enduring it.  So, set an intention each day to just enjoy your day, to smile more, to laugh more, and to not take yourself too damn seriously.
